Reflections about my Aunt Pat
What truly defines an artist?
Is it how good she draws?
Is it how she interacts with others?
Is it her joy for the artistic expression?
What is it that truly defines an Artist?
For my Aunt Pat, it's that she always tried to show the Imagination and affection she had in her
heart. She truly loved expressing her talent in a variety of artistic statements, from painting to
sculpture to teaching others the fine points of her craft. We will always remember not only her
artistic talent but also her joy for the love of family and friends.
My first memories of Pat come from our family’s first trip to California. I think it was 1952 and
we followed famed route 66 from New York to Fullerton. Pat saw to it that we experienced all
the fun and joy of Southern California including a side trip to Mexico. I remember getting to
know my cousins Ron and Wayne for the first time.
Later when I graduated from college in 1961, two friends and I undertook the great road trip
from Minnesota to California and beyond. Once again my Uncle Fred and Aunt Pat were
perfect hosts as we camped out for several days enjoying the sites and meeting my newest
cousin John.
More recently my wife Virginia and I were able to visit with Pat several times in Petaluma. Our
first visit was on Easter Sunday. Pat gathered all of the local family members for a special
dinner and visit to see Wayne and Connie’s new home under construction.
However, my most cherished memory of Pat lies with the great amount of care and love she
gave to my Dad during his yearlong recovery from a serious illness. Pat was the primary
caregiver, comforter and motivator that led to his successful recovery. My sisters and I will
never forget the great amount of love and respect Pat had for my dad.
We will remember her always for her kindness, her intelligence, for her concern for others and
love for her family.
Rest in peace Aunt Pat you lived a good life.
